Science and Technology: its Pros and Cons to Humanity

Science has been the language of everything that happens on Earth. It can explain of how things work in terms of its simplest to complicated explanation about the physical world. It has taken its role in keeping us aware of the different changes brought by creative and innovative ideas of our brilliant scientists. From the ancient till to modern times, science speaks so many things on us, it reveals that humankind can alter the natural occurrence and even put it in point where it promotes the welfare of humanity. But can it provides avenue in satisfying all the natural gifts brought to us by our Almighty Creature without destructive interventions? Can it help in saving the devastating planet Earth?

From the remote to urban community, technology as the product of science already made its worth in helping people keeping in track with the vast changes happening around. The creation of cellphones, computers, televisions, airplanes, digital cameras, sophisticated microscopes and etc. are only few of the inventions created to answer the demand of time. Because of the goal of every nation to be globally competent, a lot of innovations and inventions were introduced. Its our pride and honor if we can produce something worth it to use by many people especially when it comes with easing the way of communication, transportation, medicine, and education.

Our daily living is always affected by science through technology this time. Unlike before that we have to exert much effort in doing our simple things at home but this time we have washing machine, vacuum cleaner, gas range, microwave oven, and etc that save us time and energy in doing such things. We also have electricity that runs all of the things in any places. Almost all of us are already dependent on these. It seems that these are already part of our existence. These are only few of the benefits that we can get from the creations they made.

Now a days, life of human being and other creatures can be saved through technology. Just like for instance the Royal disease called hemophilia, during the time of Queen Victoria the life expectancy of human affected by the disease ranging from 10-15 years of age but today because of the goal of science to continually discover something new that would benefit humankind there is already cure for the disease through the synthetic clotting factor that can be injected to a person. This time a hemophiliac can enjoy his 10% years lower than the normal life expectancy of human. Technology brought numerous benefits from simple curing of wound till saving life. These are only few evidences that caters the value of science to us.

However, despite of the countless benefits that we gain from the products of science, we also suffer from its consequences. The disposal of garbages from these products were not properly oriented to the consumers. All of us are using plastics and other materials which are nonbiodegradable and we just ignore the fact that it will bring chaos to our environment when we dispose them directly to land and water. We missed to see the other side of the development of science which is putting risk the gifts of nature. As we all know that we are already facing a life threatening event on earth which is the climate change. Different countries all over the world whether it is developed, developing or underdeveloped is affected to it. Factories are disposing their wastes on land, water and even on air. Vehicles are emitting carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and other greenhouse gases. The burning of fossil fuel as our source of energy will contribute too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The use of aerosols will provide chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) to the atmosphere. These will alter the natural occurrence of abiotic and biotic components of our ecosystem. If these will still linger in the next generation, we would expect tremendous impact on nature.

We are mere benefactor of all the inventions and innovations in science but it is also our obligation to be responsible enough in maximizing those things. We should take into consideration that God gave us the dominion to enjoy His creations but we have to be responsible in using them. We should remember that all of things that we are enjoying in the present will last in time. So as the highest form of animal let us use the intellect that God gave us in weighing the advantages and disadvantages of science to our lives.
